Current status

SUNET, the Swedish University Computer Network, has for many years had one of the most visited ftp archives in the world. Thanks to new equipment the archive can now receive even more visitors. The new SUNET archive is dimensioned to handle more than 10 000 users at the same time.

The enhancement of SUNET's archive has been a long process. The acceptance test was formally approved on July 14, although the new system has been operating since June 1, 2004.

On behalf of SUNET the IT Support Department at Uppsala University has been responsible for the operational management of this popular archive.

In the archive there are large amounts of material of interest to both universities and colleges. Users come from all around the world. The well-organised structure, the speed and the wealth of information with mirrors of other archives has attracted many visitors.

The IT Support Department at Uppsala University sees the approved acceptance test as something of a new start. The old equipment was heavily overloaded and users experienced slow downloads and other problems.

The installation of the new equipment has taken some time. Uniting SUNET's demands on quality and the system's technical complexity has not been easy. However, with the acceptance test now approved the group running the project at the IT Support Department can begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

During the development of the archive the IT Support Department has worked closely with personnel from the SAN FS development team from the USA and UK. SAN FS stands for Storage Area Network File System and is a product developed by IBM. The project is now in the 'system test' phase
